The Chinese Embassy in Israel on Wednesday strongly condemned a visit to the Taiwan region by Israeli lawmaker Boaz Toporovsky, accusing him and several other lawmakers of violating the one-China principle and undermining the political foundation of China-Israel relations.
In a statement published on the embassy’s official WeChat account, a spokesperson said Toporovsky had “once again colluded in a provocative visit to Taiwan” and made “wrong remarks” on the Taiwan issue.
The spokesperson stressed that there is only one China in the world, that Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory, and that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing all of China. The statement described the one-China principle as a widely recognized norm in international relations.
The embassy also recalled that Toporovsky had visited the Taiwan region in September last year and made what it described as “erroneous remarks” regarding the Taiwan question.
According to the spokesperson, the biggest threat to peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits comes from what China calls “Taiwan independence” separatist activities. The statement said China would never allow Taiwan to be separated from the country in any form and would not tolerate external interference in what it views as its reunification process.
The embassy further cited the Joint Communique on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between China and Israel, which recognizes the government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government of China and states that Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory.
The spokesperson accused certain Israeli lawmakers of acting in violation of Israel’s commitment to the one-China policy and of collaborating with “Taiwan independence” forces to provoke tensions across the Taiwan Straits.
The statement urged the lawmakers involved to immediately stop what it called their “erroneous words and deeds,” warning them not to underestimate China’s determination to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity or to believe they could “cross red lines on the Taiwan question without paying a price.”
