‘You’re lying again,’ Cuban foreign minister rebukes United States ambassador to the United Nations

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla responded Oct. 27 to United States Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz during the General Assembly debate on the draft resolution calling for an end to the economic, commercial, and financial blockade against the island.

In a point of order, the Cuban foreign minister accused the United States government of resorting to falsehoods, exerting pressure on member states, and disrespecting the people and government of Cuba.

“The United States not only lies in a crude and arrogant manner; it also undermines the dignity of member states, exerts pressure, and offends the dignity of the people and government of Cuba,” he said.

Rodríguez Parrilla addressed Waltz directly and challenged his arguments during the session. “Mr. Waltz: you are lying again. I hope you have better performances in your future political posts on the National Security Council, because here, at the United Nations, your performance is very poor. Familiarize yourself better with the document you have in your hand before coming to read it,” he stated.

The head of Cuban diplomacy rejected attempts to divert attention from the central theme of the session — dedicated to the United States blockade — through accusations he described as baseless.

“We will not accept Washington’s attempt to replace the debate on the blockade — which is what this Assembly is examining — with a string of unsubstantiated accusations,” he maintained.

The foreign minister added that the United States delegation came to the United Nations to repeat falsehoods and pressure other countries, rather than engage in dialogue and listen to member states.

Washington puts on a fictional show before the General Assembly

The United States delegation opened its statement with a history lesson so creative that even the timeline had to speak up: it portrayed Ronald Reagan warning the Cuban people in 1979, when he was not yet president — he arrived at the White House in 1981.

With such “rigor,” the rest of the narrative sounds more like a fictional script than a multilateral debate: a succession of grandiloquent assertions, conveniently adjusted dates, and well-timed silences, presented to the Assembly as if they were revealed truths.

The usual litany followed — confiscations, prisoner camps, forced labor, and a supposed 67-year-long lesson — all delivered in the tone of someone who believes that repeating an accusation many times turns it into proof.

Cuba is not a threat; the blockade is

Likewise, the Cuban foreign minister thanked Washington for the publicity it is providing, as he put it, for Cuban tourist destinations and demanded that United States citizens be allowed to travel freely to the island.

This is the 34th time that the United Nations’ highest deliberative body has submitted for consideration the draft resolution titled “The Need to End the Economic, Commercial, and Financial Blockade Imposed by the United States of America Against Cuba,” which will be put to a vote Oct. 28.
