Russian Response, 'Islamic NATO,' Tensions in the West Bank, and German Intelligence Powers: This Week's Major Geopolitical Shifts
The escalating Russian-Ukrainian war, Moscow's firm response, new movements in Washington-Moscow diplomatic relations, discussions of a new Middle Eastern defense alliance, the expansion of Germany's intelligence agency powers, and the crisis facing Palestinian families on the West Bank were among the key international events that captured global attention this week.
Russia's Harsh Response to Ukrainian Attacks
In response to long-range strikes by Ukraine on Russian territory, Russia has intensified its attacks. However, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, speaking to Russian media, stated that while Russia would not resort to targeting civilians as Ukraine does, it would take stricter measures to destroy the infrastructure supporting Kyiv's war machine. Under these circumstances, Russian strikes were reported against military industrial and dual-use facilities in Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia, as well as port infrastructure on the Black Sea coast.
Problems have also arisen regarding the supply of Patriot interceptor missiles, essential for Ukraine's air defense system. Reports indicate that Ukraine's Western backers have only a limited number of these missiles left, with the US having used a significant quantity in its war against Iran.
Meanwhile, reports emerged that Ukraine had requested a temporary truce from Russia regarding attacks on ships in the Black Sea. Moscow rejected the proposal, and Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused the Kyiv regime of carrying out "shameless terrorist acts" against civilian vessels.
New Problems for Zelensky with Western Allies
Amidst Ukraine's continued need for Western support, this week also saw attention drawn to President Volodymyr Zelensky's actions, which have complicated relations with some key backers. Tensions have also emerged with Poland, one of the European countries that supplied Ukraine with Patriot missiles. Poland criticized Ukraine's actions regarding the remains of Yevhen Konovalets, who collaborated with Nazi Germany during World War II.
Additionally, US Vice President J.D. Vance reportedly engaged in a heated exchange with Zelensky regarding Ukrainian attacks on Black Sea vessels.
Release of Former US Marine Held in Russia
A notable diplomatic move in Russia-US relations was Russia's release of former American Marine Robert Gilman. Gilman, who had been arrested in Russia in 2022 for assaulting a police officer, received a pardon from Russian President Vladimir Putin and returned to the United States on August 12.
US President Donald Trump stated that Russia agreed to release Gilman on humanitarian grounds following his discussions with Putin. American envoy Steve Witkoff was also reported to have played a significant role in these negotiations.
Germany's Expansion of Intelligence Powers
A major debate on security and intelligence service powers has emerged within Germany. Under new legislative proposals introduced by Chancellor Friedrich Merz's government, Germany's foreign intelligence agency, the BND, could be authorized to conduct offensive cyberattacks against Russia and other foreign adversaries.
Furthermore, proposals have been made to grant the domestic intelligence agency, the BfV, new powers to access German citizens' smartphones and computers.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described these new powers as a "revolution," while Moscow criticized them as another example of Germany's growing militarization.
Germany's far-right AfD party also criticized the laws, warning that the powers could be used for stricter state control rather than as an early warning system to protect democracy.
The 'Makkah Agreement' Between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan
Another significant development that could alter the Middle Eastern balance of power was the signing of a defense cooperation agreement between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan.
Signed in Makkah on August 7, this trilateral defense pact stipulates that an attack on one member state would be considered an attack on all three.
Critics have dubbed it an "Islamic NATO," though the true defense capabilities of the new alliance and the actions that signatories would take in the event of an attack on one member remain unclear. Nonetheless, the agreement has been criticized by the Iranian side, which reportedly called it a "paper agreement."
Analysts at the Moscow Center for Middle Eastern Studies have analyzed the potential impacts of this agreement on Middle Eastern power relations. According to one analysis, these three countries will need to build deterrence against both Israel and Iran without direct US intervention. Another opinion suggests the agreement could be an opportunity for Turkey to leverage its large defense industry to further consolidate its regional influence.
Meanwhile, analyst Robinder Nath Sachdev pointed out that Pakistan, a nuclear-armed state, strengthening new defense ties is a matter of concern for India as well.
Tucker Carlson's Statements and US Politics
American journalist Tucker Carlson was also a figure of international political attention this week. In a nearly hour-long interview with RT journalist Rick Sanchez, Carlson leveled harsh criticism at the American political system, the "permanent bureaucracy," and the consensus between Democratic and Republican parties on foreign policy. Stating he had no plans to run for president, Carlson also commented on the relationship between money and foreign policy within the US power structure. According to him, while the Democratic and Republican parties appear politically opposed, there is significant agreement between them on certain fundamentals of US money and foreign policy. He argued that powerful financial interests, economic and political forces, and Washington's foreign policy apparatus influence politics in both parties.
Carlson suggested that although Americans appear to have two parties, they function as part of the same political system on certain core policies. According to the RT report, he described this situation as "a one-party state that pretends to be a democracy."
Another key point of Carlson's criticism was the American "permanent bureaucracy" and its influence over foreign policy decisions. In his view, although presidents and governments change through elections, certain powerful parts of the state apparatus remain continuous, thereby influencing the maintenance of core US foreign policy directions.
Meanwhile, Carlson also claimed that Israel attempted to involve him in sharing information regarding the controversial Hunter Biden laptop incident from the 2020 US election campaign.
Carlson also leveled strong criticism against the neoconservative political forces in Washington, groups he called the "war lobby," and Israel's influence over American foreign policy. He emphasized his readiness to publicly comment on these issues in the future.
Siege of Palestinian Families in the West Bank
As another flashpoint in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the siege of three Palestinian families inside their homes in the village of Qusra on the West Bank stands out.
Reports indicated that armed Israeli settlers had surrounded these homes, and one family's ties to relatives living in the US drew an unusually strong response from Washington.
US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee called the settlers "Israeli terrorists," stating that besieging a Palestinian family's home and behaving in such a manner constituted a crime.
RT journalist Charlotte Dubenskii traveled to Qusra but, despite having permission from the Israeli military to enter the area, her team was unable to reach the besieged Palestinian homes due to interference from the settlers, as reported by RT.
Changing International Power Relations
While this week's events may appear separate, a common thread connects them. As the war in Ukraine drags on and Russia intensifies its response, limited yet significant actions like prisoner releases are also occurring in diplomatic relations between Russia and the US.
In the Middle East, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan are building a new security framework, while Germany is crafting new powers for its intelligence services. Meanwhile, events in the West Bank raise new questions about the limits and internal tensions within US-Israel relations.
Accordingly, this week's events indicate that not only the war in Ukraine but also the broader international power structure, encompassing Europe, the Middle East, and American foreign policy, is rapidly changing.
