Iran Launches Surprise Missile Attack on US Base in Jordan – Middle East Tensions Escalate Again

Escalating the ongoing US-Iran confrontation in the Middle East, Iran has launched a ballistic missile attack targeting a US military base in Jordan, according to US officials. The strike is regarded as Iran's first direct attack since US President Donald Trump temporarily suspended military strikes against the Islamic Republic several days earlier to allow room for diplomatic negotiations.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had planned the "surprise attack." According to US reports, all incoming missiles were intercepted before reaching their targets, and no American military personnel were killed or injured in the incident.

The attack occurred while efforts were underway to revive diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran following a temporary pause in hostilities. Reports indicate that the Trump administration had suspended airstrikes since last Friday in an attempt to create an opportunity for a diplomatic solution. However, Iran's latest missile attack has dealt a significant setback to those efforts.

Following the attack, US and Saudi Arabian air forces reportedly carried out a series of joint airstrikes targeting weapons depots, logistics centers, and military facilities belonging to Iran-backed armed groups in Iraq. The operation is described as the first direct joint military action conducted by the United States and Saudi Arabia against those targets.

US defense officials say that Iran-backed groups have carried out more than 30 drone attacks in recent days, while hundreds of attacks targeting US forces and military installations have been reported since February.

Prior to this latest incident, an earlier Iranian strike on the same US military facility in Jordan reportedly resulted in the deaths of American service members, prompting the United States to launch days of retaliatory airstrikes against Iran. Although hostilities had temporarily subsided afterward, analysts believe the latest missile strike has effectively brought that pause to an end.

The missile attack came just hours after President Donald Trump held a closed-door meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. The talks lasted approximately 90 minutes and were described by the White House as "positive and productive," although few details of the discussions were made public.

The incident marks the first reported ballistic missile attack on a US military installation since President Trump suspended American strikes against Iran last Friday (24).

Speaking on Monday, Trump said that Washington and Tehran were engaged in "very friendly" negotiations. However, he warned that the United States could return to "strong military action" if diplomatic efforts failed. He said the bombing campaign had been paused to allow negotiations to proceed but warned that Iran would face severe military action if no agreement could be reached.

President Trump also stated that the United States was prepared to resume major military operations against Iran should the negotiations collapse. Reports further indicate that the two sides have yet to reach an agreement on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and addressing broader regional security concerns.

Analysts warn that the latest escalation could significantly increase the risk of a wider conflict across the Middle East, with potential consequences for global oil prices, international trade, and regional security.
