Govt Urged to Act on Russian Fuel Offer as Patriotic National Movement Writes to President
The Patriotic National Movement (PNM) has called on President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to intervene in securing petroleum imports from Russia, citing missed opportunities to obtain fuel at concessional rates.
In a letter addressed to the President, the movement noted that two Russian ministers had recently visited Sri Lanka and held multiple rounds of discussions on supplying petroleum at lower prices. Despite these engagements, the PNM expressed concern that the government has yet to take concrete steps to procure fuel from Russia.
The organization urged the President to use his authority to ensure that Sri Lanka benefits from the proposed arrangement, emphasizing the country’s ongoing economic challenges and the need for cost-effective energy solutions.
Dr. Wasantha Bandara, General Secretary of the Patriotic National Movement, stated in the letter that rejecting what he described as a gesture of goodwill from Russia would amount to turning away from a reliable partner at a critical time. He emphasized that such cooperation could help Sri Lanka address its ongoing economic crises.
