National Groups Accuse Government of Blocking Russian Fuel Deal Amid Foreign Pressure

National organizations have accused the government of creating psychological and political barriers that prevent Sri Lanka from securing petroleum supplies from Russia, alleging undue influence from the United States and India.

The groups claim that despite an opportunity to obtain Russian fuel under favorable conditions, authorities have failed to act, ultimately placing a financial burden on the public. They argue that delays and inaction could force the government to pay a heavy price, both economically and politically.

Speaking to Lanka Leader, Wasantha Bandara said that even when a Russian Deputy Minister of Energy visited Sri Lanka and offered assistance, decision-making appeared to be influenced by external diplomatic considerations.

According to him, reliance on what he described as the positions of American and Indian representatives could contribute to a future energy crisis if alternative supply options are not pursued.

Dr. Bandara also dismissed official explanations for the delay—such as the anticipated easing of U.S. sanctions and logistical challenges in securing vessels—as insufficient. He alleged that the real obstacle lies in geopolitical pressure aimed at preventing Sri Lanka from establishing long-term energy cooperation with Russia.

He warned that failing to capitalize on the current opportunity to secure a long-term agreement with Russia could have serious consequences, emphasizing that the government may ultimately be held accountable for missing what he described as a critical strategic opening.
