Trump Agrees to Resume Nuclear Talks With Iran’s New Leadership — Report

Donald Trump said Sunday that he has agreed to restart nuclear negotiations with Iran’s new leadership, according to a report by The Atlantic.

“They want to talk, and I have agreed to talk, so I will be talking to them,” Trump said in a phone interview with the magazine. He added that Iran should have acted sooner, describing the earlier terms as “very practical and easy to do,” but said Tehran “waited too long.” He did not specify who his counterparts would be or when the discussions might occur, saying only, “I can’t tell you that.”

Trump also noted that some of the Iranian officials previously involved in negotiations were no longer alive. “Most of those people are gone. Some of the people we were dealing with are gone,” he said, calling it “a big hit” in reference to the joint Israeli-US strikes on Iran that began Saturday.

When asked whether there had been renewed Iranian threats against the US homeland since the start of the attacks, Trump declined to provide details.

He said he does not expect the military action to hurt Republican efforts ahead of the US midterm elections, arguing that his administration remains focused on the domestic economy. Trump also suggested that the impact on oil markets would likely be less severe for American consumers than some analysts had predicted.

Earlier Sunday, hours before Iran confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in the US-Israeli strikes, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told NBC News that Iran is “certainly interested” in de-escalation, while dismissing Trump’s call for regime change as a “mission impossible.”
