Dr. Jagath Chandrawansa Claims U.S. “Deep State” Using Marco Rubio to Target Cuba

Dr. Jagath Chandrawansa has alleged that U.S. Senator Marco Rubio is acting in line with what he describes as the interests of the American “deep state” to destabilize and overthrow Cuba.

Speaking to the Lanka Leader website, Dr. Chandrawansa said the United States is seeking a major geopolitical victory as it approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding on July 4, arguing that U.S. global influence is rapidly declining. According to him, elements within the U.S. power structure believe that regaining control over Cuba would help revive what he called collapsing American imperialism.

Dr. Chandrawansa claimed that Marco Rubio, a Cuban-American senator and ally of former President Donald Trump, is being used for this purpose. He said Rubio has a personal interest in Cuba’s political future, noting that Rubio’s family left Cuba following the revolution led by Fidel Castro and has since been associated with anti-Castro and anti-socialist positions.

He further stated that Cuba’s strategic and economic value makes it a key target for the United States. Prior to the Cuban Revolution, he said, Cuba served as a major tourist destination for Americans and hosted numerous U.S. hotels, tobacco companies, and food producers. According to Dr. Chandrawansa, the United States has sought to regain control of the island for more than six decades without success.

Dr. Chandrawansa argued that recent U.S. pressure on Cuba has intensified due to worsening economic conditions in the United States. He claimed that Washington views control over Cuba as more important than other strategic interests, such as Greenland, citing financial and technological limitations that prevent the U.S. from fully exploiting resources even in territories it already controls, such as Alaska.

He called on socialist and anti-imperialist movements worldwide to intervene diplomatically and apply pressure on the United States to protect Cuba’s security.

Dr. Chandrawansa also pointed to broader global economic shifts, noting that China has reduced its holdings of U.S. Treasury bonds from approximately $1.3 trillion to about $680 billion, while increasing its gold reserves. He cited International Monetary Fund data showing a decline in the U.S. dollar’s share of global trade to 52 percent, and claimed that alternative analyses place the figure closer to 30 percent, with many countries increasingly trading in local currencies.

According to Dr. Chandrawansa, the rise of the BRICS grouping and weakening confidence in the dollar have heightened concerns within U.S. power circles, increasing the likelihood of aggressive actions against Cuba.

He also said that U.S. efforts to weaken Iran and change its government have failed due to economic pressures and international opposition, and warned that Cuba now faces what he described as its most serious threat. He urged anti-imperialist groups globally to unite in support of Cuba.

Dr. Chandrawansa cited a recent statement by Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, who said that Cuba would not face an internal coup similar to Venezuela’s and that U.S. interference in Cuba would not succeed in the same manner.
