Japan's Nuclear Ambitions Spark Regional Alarm, Challenge Post-War Order: China

China has issued a stern warning, asserting that Japan's recent public overtures toward nuclear armament represent a blatant challenge to the post-war international order and a severe threat to global stability. The remarks have ignited fierce condemnation from within Japan and across the region.

The controversy erupted after Japan's Asahi Shimbun reported an unnamed senior official from Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's office stating a personal belief that "Japan should possess nuclear weapons." The official is reportedly a key security policy advisor to the Prime Minister.

In a strongly-worded statement on Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian expressed shock over the remarks and the Japanese government's subsequent response. He noted that Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi declined to clarify the comments, and Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, when asked about potential revisions to Japan's long-standing Three Non-Nuclear Principles, stated "all options would be discussed."

"Given previous reports that Prime Minister Takaichi plans to revise the three non-nuclear principles, the above-mentioned statements amount to a blatant challenge to the postwar international order and the nuclear non-proliferation regime," Spokesperson Lin stated. He characterized the shift as "a U-turn from Japan's commitment to 'peaceful development.'"

Lin directly linked the nuclear rhetoric to Japan's broader strategic direction, stating, "Japanese right-wing forces' remilitarization ambition is rather apparent." He also connected it to Prime Minister Takaichi's recent remarks on Taiwan, which China has previously condemned.

The comments have triggered significant backlash. Former Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba argued that acquiring nuclear weapons would "absolutely not benefit Japan." Former Defense Minister Gen Nakatani cautioned that this was "not something to be discussed lightly."

International opposition has also been swift. Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko told TASS news agency that Moscow's attitude is "absolutely negative," warning that Japan's militarization would worsen the Northeast Asian situation. North Korea has also voiced its opposition.

Analysts highlight the alarming shift in discourse. "Calls for Japan's potential nuclear armament have shifted from fringe far-right discussions in the past to open remarks by senior government officials, underscoring the urgency of the situation," said Lü Chao, a professor at the Liaoning Academy of Social Sciences. He suggested the remarks may be a "trial balloon" to gauge reactions from regional powers and the United States.

The expert pointedly questioned Washington's stance, noting its lack of unequivocal opposition. "Policymakers in Washington should consider a critical question: if Japan were to acquire nuclear weapons, would it remain content in its role of obediently following US orders?"

Amid the furor over nuclear weapons, Japan's Niigata Prefecture on Monday approved the restart of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant, the world's largest, marking a significant step in Japan's return to nuclear energy over a decade after the Fukushima disaster.

Professor Lü urged the international community, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to impose strict controls, monitor Japan's nuclear fuel applications, and remain highly vigilant regarding its nuclear activities.

The international community is now closely watching Japan's next moves, with growing concern that its strategic posture may be undergoing a historic and destabilizing transformation.
