Guangzhou Redefines the Modern City, Powered by Advanced Manufacturing

A delegation of Sri Lankan media representatives visited Guangzhou, China, from November 24th to 30th upon invitation by the Chinese government. Among them was Mr. Jeewantha Jayatissa, representing the Lanka Leader news website. The following insights are based on an interview with him.

Guangzhou’s recent evolution is marked by its shift from a historic trading port into a modern global metropolis at the heart of one of the world’s most dynamic economic regions.

A key milestone in this transformation was the 2017 launch of the Greater Bay Area (GBA) national strategy, which integrates Guangzhou with Hong Kong and Macao. Within this framework, Guangzhou was designated as one of four “central engine cities”—alongside Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Macao—tasked with leading as a comprehensive national central city across several sectors:

Commerce and Transportation: With one of the world's busiest ports, Baiyun International Airport, and the Guangzhou Railway Hub, the city continues to serve as China’s vital “Southern Gateway.”

Culture and Education: Drawing on over 2,200 years of history, Guangzhou leverages its rich heritage and prestigious universities to bolster its cultural and educational influence.

Science and Technological Innovation: While innovation clusters such as Guangzhou Science City and Nansha have grown significantly, they often complement the strong tech ecosystem of neighboring Shenzhen.

Economic and Urban Modernization: The city has transitioned from low-end manufacturing to advanced industries like automotive, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and fintech. Large-scale urban development—including the Zhujiang New Town central business district and one of the world’s longest metro systems—has reshaped the cityscape. Major events such as the 2010 Asian Games have also accelerated infrastructure development.

Guangzhou’s international engagement continues to expand:

It acts as a key hub for the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), linking China with Southeast Asia, Africa, and beyond through robust logistics networks. The city hosts one of the world’s largest concentrations of consulates general.

It is home to the Canton Fair (China Import and Export Fair), a biannual global trade event held since 1957.

During their visit, the Sri Lankan delegation was warmly received by Mr. Tu Hongzhe, Deputy Director-General of the Guangzhou Foreign Affairs Office. He engaged in extensive discussions with the delegates regarding Guangzhou’s international strategy. In his role, Mr. Tu is responsible for translating national and municipal foreign policy into actionable plans, particularly in advancing the city’s role in the Greater Bay Area and the Belt and Road Initiative.

In summary, Guangzhou’s recent history reflects its ambitious reintegration into the global economy as a leading Chinese metropolis. Mr. Tu Hongzhe, as Deputy Director-General of the Foreign Affairs Office, plays a pivotal operational and representational role in this process—facilitating international networks and translating strategic vision into daily diplomatic engagement, thereby strengthening Guangzhou’s global standing.
