UN General Assembly Overwhelmingly Backs Cuba’s Resolution to End U.S. Embargo

The United Nations General Assembly on Thursday approved Cuba’s annual resolution calling for an end to the decades-long U.S. economic, commercial and financial embargo, with an overwhelming 165 countries voting in favor, seven against, and twelve abstaining.

This marks the thirty-third consecutive year since 1992 that the General Assembly has adopted the Cuban resolution, reaffirming global opposition to Washington’s blockade. The vote once again underscored widespread international condemnation of the unilateral U.S. measures.

Countries voting against the resolution included the United States, Israel, Paraguay, Hungary, North Macedonia, Argentina, and Ukraine, while twelve nations, among them Albania, Morocco, and Poland, abstained.

In a statement following the vote, the Venezuelan government congratulated the Cuban people and government, describing the result as evidence that a “multicentric and multipolar world is advancing with strength, rejecting imperial arrogance and reinforcing Cuba’s moral standing.” Caracas renewed its call for the immediate, unconditional, and complete lifting of the U.S. embargo and the end of all unilateral coercive measures.

During the debate preceding the vote, numerous countries and regional groups denounced the U.S. sanctions, calling them a violation of international law and the principles of sovereignty and non-interference. Many member states stressed that the embargo lacks moral or legal justification and continues to inflict severe economic hardship on the Cuban population.

According to Cuba’s report to the Assembly, economic losses caused by the embargo in the last fiscal year exceeded $7.5 billion, representing a 49 percent increase from the previous year.

The resolution’s consistent adoption over more than three decades makes it one of the most enduring and strongly supported measures in UN history—symbolizing global unity against the U.S. embargo on Cuba.
