American Sanctions Have Been Destroying Cuba for Sixty Years – Dr. Wasantha Bandara

The United States’ economic sanctions have caused immense suffering to the people of Cuba for nearly six decades, said Dr. Wasantha Bandara, General Secretary of the Patriotic National Movement, in a statement released to the media today(27).

Dr. Bandara made these remarks while condemning what he described as “illegal pressure” exerted by the United States on United Nations member states ahead of the UN General Assembly vote scheduled for October 28 and 29, which will once again consider a resolution calling for the lifting of the U.S. embargo on Cuba.

He noted that Cuba has faced enormous economic losses and humanitarian hardships as a result of the sanctions, which have restricted access to essential goods such as fuel, medicine, and food.

In his press release, Dr. Bandara warned that Washington is attempting to spread false information and intimidate countries expected to support the Cuban resolution, in an effort to block international consensus.

“The world has repeatedly voted in favor of Cuba at the United Nations, exposing the injustice and inhumanity of this decades-long blockade,” Dr. Bandara stated, adding that member states must resist such pressure and stand for fairness and human dignity.
